Oscar screener ban remedy studied

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Hollywood Academy Awards officials were guardedly optimistic a compromise can be reached regarding pre-Oscar screening of nominees.

There was no resolution during a 90-minute conference call Thursday but a number of suggestions seemed to kindle hope for Academy Award voters who want to view nominees on video, a long-standing practice stymied by piracy fears.

Daily Variety said further talks are expected to involve encryption and watermarking technology available for a uniform security procedure.

A proposal by top-ranking members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences volunteer to take over the job of sending out screeners to its members met with considerable resistance.
