NARAS chapter honoring musical heroes

CHICAGO, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The Chicago Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Inc. will honor four local music icons with its 2003 Chicago Heroes Awards.

Tenor saxophonist Von Freeman, bluesman Buddy Guy, children's music fixture Ella Jenkins and founder Bob Koester, the founder of Chicago-based Delmark Records, the country's oldest independent jazz and blues label, will be honored Nov. 6.

Koester also runs the Jazz Record Mart, the biggest blues and jazz record store in the world.

Past award recipients have ranged from Ramsey Lewis, Ken Nordine, Sam Ley and Koko Taylor to controversial R&B singer R. Kelly and Smashing Pumpkins.

The Heroes Award ceremony and gala dinner will take place at the ballroom of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
