NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The 2004 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival has canceled its scheduled opening day of Thursday, April 22.
The festival will open Friday, April 23 and run through Sunday, May 2, 2004, festival officials announced.

Festival producer-director Quint Davis said, "In the year of the 35th anniversary event we're resuming the traditional Friday kick-off. Thursday opening in 2003 was different and fun in its own way, but it's not financially viable in the current economic and tourism environment. We'll be carefully monitoring the situation for opportunities to extend the festival in the future."
