Bolshoi claims ballerina is too fat

MOSCOW, Russia, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Bolshoi Theater bosses in Moscow have fired one of Russia's best-known ballerinas for becoming too fat, the New York Times reported.

Anastasia Volochkova, 27, said she is in top form and weighs 109 pounds, the result of a strict diet, but theater administrators do not like her and want to push her out.

Volochkova and her lawyer said she will sue the Bolshoi over her contract.

"She is heavy for a ballerina; she is hard to lift," said Katerina Novikova, the theater's spokeswoman.

The Bolshoi also charged the ballerina is too tall at 6 feet, while Volchkova claims she is 5-feet-7. A measurement done by the New York Times found that Volchkova was 5-feet-6.

"The situation with the Bolshoi is not about height or weight," the ballerina said. "Height and weight are not the test of a great ballerina."
