LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- "American Psycho" star Christian Bale is answering the Bat Signal and will be the next Caped Crusader.
Bale has been cast as a young Bruce Wayne, the millionaire crimefighter, in the next "Batman" flick.
"What I see in Christian is the ultimate embodiment of Bruce Wayne ... exactly the balance of darkness and light," director Christopher Nolan said in a statement issued by Warner Brothers.
Following a series of auditions, Bale was selected over the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Joshua Jackson, Cillian Murphy, Henry Cavill and Eion Bailey, the Hollywood Reporter said.
Zap2It reports the film will follow Batman's early career. It will be produced by Emma Thomas.
Among Bale's other credits are "Empire of the Sun," "Little Women," "Velvet Goldmine," "Reign of Fire" and "Equilibrium."
The 29-year-old actor has just wrapped up work on "The Machinist." He plays a lathe operator dying of a strange insomnia.
