LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Woody Allen, who normally shies from the press, greeted adoring fans at the Venice Film Festival in Italy Wednesday.

To mark the opening of the world's oldest film festival, Allen stood alongside his wife, Soon-Yi, their two adopted children, in joining Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci, the co-stars of his new comedy Anything Else, Zap2it.com reported.

The festival is showing 145 titles this year, but Anything Else is not in competition for the Golden Lion award, the festival's highest honor.

Allen told reporters: "I've always been invited, but I've always made excuses. I felt I just owed it to the Italian people to come and participate."
