COMMACK, N.Y., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain was a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 winner over unseeded Argentine Jose Acasuso Monday in TD Waterhouse Cup.
Earlier, Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco, seeded seventh, overcame Spanish qualifier Fernando Verdasco, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-0, in his first-round match.
South African qualifier Rik de Voest made Michael Chang's last appearance here a short one with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Chang was a finalist here 10 years ago and had reached at least the quarterfinals in all previous six appearances.
Also, Nicolas Kiefer of Germany rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, while qualifier Karol Beck of Slovakia rallied to defeat Spaniard David Sanchez, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Top seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand begins defense of his title against Russian Nikolay Davydenko Tuesday.
