Jazz labels to host benefit Aug. 22

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Concord Records and its Playboy Jazz affiliate will team up Aug. 22 to host a Los Angeles benefit for the Jazz Musicians Emergency Fund.

As "freelancers," many jazz musicians aren't protected by pensions, health plans and other benefits. The fund, administered by the Jazz Foundation of America, has helped more than 150 jazz musicians with everything from urgent medical care to making late rent payments and even replacing stolen instruments. The foundation has also established a volunteer network of caring jazz enthusiasts who provide free legal, dental and psychological services as needed.

To strengthen the group's funding sources, the labels will host a $1,000 per ticket "Jazz After Dark" benefit at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, featuring entertainment by singer Diane Schuur and the Poncho Sanchez Latin jazz band.
