NEW YORK, July 29 (UPI) -- CBS has given the green light to an original movie based on Jane Hamilton's best-selling novel "The Book of Ruth."

Oscar-nominated actress Christine Lahti will star, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Suzette Couture, known for NBC's "Martha Inc.: The Story of Martha Stewart" has adapted the book for the small screen, with Robert Greenwald executive producing the movie for television.

"The Book of Ruth," described by Greenwald as a "mother-daughter story about the bonds and chains that love can create and sometimes have to be broken," centers on Ruth Grey, a young woman with low self-esteem who lives in the shadow of her bright brother and clashes with her strong-willed, domineering mother, May played by Lahti.
