NEW YORK, July 18 (UPI) -- New York police are investigating whether record label Island Def Jam is linked to a break-in at the offices of TVT Records.
The New York Post reported the break-in occurred Wednesday morning at TVT's downtown offices and the thief made off with just one thing: TVT head Steve Gottlieb's laptop -- which sources said was loaded with personal information.
TVT was recently awarded $132 million in a lawsuit against Island Def Jam that charged the record label, and its chief, Lyor Cohen, with fraud. The label had reneged on a deal to put out an album that featured hip-hop star Ja Rule, who is signed to Island Def Jam subsidiary Murder Inc.
"It's part of the investigation -- we are aware of the Def Jam suit," said one law enforcement source.
This source also said it is possible the incident was a random burglary.
