Sound of Music star retires her voice

LONDON, July 6 (UPI) -- Singer Julie Andrews said in an interview Sunday she doubted she would sing in public again because of her 1997 throat operation.

The actress, made famous for her roles in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, told the British Broadcasting Corp. she now had a "wonderful, deep, bass voice of about five notes, and that's about it."

After 20 months on Broadway and performing on the road in Victor Victoria, Andrews started having problems with her throat. She went through surgery but did not recover fully.

In 2000, Andrews settled a malpractice claim over the operation she said left her unable to sing professionally. The terms of the settlement with two of New York's Mount Sinai Hospital doctors were confidential.

Andrews has written children's books since the operation and is now directing a stage play in New York.
