Performers merger still up in air

LOS ANGELES, July 3 (UPI) -- The chief architect of a plan to merge the performers unions is not at all put off by an unsuccessful vote on the matter.

The closeness of the Tuesday vote to combine the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, is a signal to keep working toward the goal of consolidation, SAG Chief Executive Officer Bob Pisano told Daily Variety. He said pro-merger sentiment pervades SAG.

Opponents of the move say the vote shows members are uncertain about the merger.

If voters had approved, a new Alliance of International Media Artists likely would have been formed with affiliates for actors, broadcasters and recording artists. AIMA also would be expected to start merging with other performers groups such as Actors Equity, which represents about 40,000 theater performers.
