Cuban singing star defects to U.S.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas, June 11 (UPI) -- A Cuban pop star has been released after seeking to defect at a Texas border crossing, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Carlos Manuel, 30, decided to defect last week while he was performing in Mexico City, the New York Times reported. He and five members of his entourage decided to walk across the border into Brownsville on Sunday.

The detainees were questioned for two days by officials from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division of the Department of Homeland Security. The immigration holding building "resembled a resort," Manuel said.

Under the Cuban Adjustment Act, a Cuban citizen who reaches the United States is allowed to stay after being interviewed and inspected. A year and a day after entering the United States, that person is allowed to become a permanent resident.

Manuel intends to settle in Miami and continue his musical recording career.
