The atlas documents potential storage locations for about 3.5 trillion tons of carbon dioxide in reservoirs, coal seams and saline formations in the United States and Canada.

The Energy Department suggests that up to 1,100 years of carbon dioxide storage is available in those formations in the United States and Canada.

The atlas can be used to compare the available storage locations to the amount of carbon dioxide that needs to be stored. It also presents updated information on the location of carbon dioxide emission sources.

The atlas was created by the Office of Fossil Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory and led to regional carbon sequestration partnerships. There are seven regional partnerships in the United States and Canada that include more than 350 organizations, 42 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces.
