ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 14 (UPI) -- Lithuania is interested in developing energy cooperation with Kazakhstan, said Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas.

"We touched on very important energy issues. This is very important for Lithuania," Kirkilas said during a meeting with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Kazakhstan Today news agency reported. "Lithuania needs alternative supplies of gas and, possibly, oil."

He said the supply need comes from Lithuania's plans to close the Ignalina nuclear power plant.

The possibility of constructing a liquefied gas terminal in Klaipeda, a seaport in Lithuania, was also discussed.

"I think that Kazakhstan will participate in the construction of the terminal or in supplying liquefied gas," Nazarbayev said.
