CAPE TOWN, South Africa, April 24 (UPI) -- The Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum met in Cape Town, South Africa, to discuss carbon capture.

CSLF was led by 21 nations and the European Commission to South Africa where efforts were made to develop more cost-effective technologies for the separation and capture of carbon dioxide for its transport and long-term safe storage.

The CSLF was formed in 2003 as a voluntary climate initiative of developed and developing nations to enable early reduction and steady elimination of the large-source greenhouse gas emissions. It has 22 members that produce approximately three-quarters of the world emissions and collaborate in technology development and demonstration.

Besides discussions that focused on improving carbon capture and storage technologies, while in Cape Town, CSLF declared its support for the G8 recommendations for near-term deployment of CCS and agreed on a mechanism leading to an updated CSLF strategic plan. The meeting also produced recognition of a 20th demonstration project for zero-emissions production of electricity and hydrogen from fossil fuels.

Delegates also continued work on fundamental CCS issues such as financial tools, risk management, regulation, legislation and achieving public acceptance.
