New homes in the range of $206,000 are attracting customers to purchase solar-powered homes, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Builders for years have touted the energy efficiency of their homes, such as better insulation and power-saving appliances, and some companies are even building entire energy efficient communities where "green" home can cut heating and cooling costs by up to 50 percent.

Even in areas where people expect more affordable homes, green building is gaining popularity with homeowners who can save money on oil and natural gas.

Most solar systems offset about 15 percent of electricity usage in a 4,000-square-foot home that uses an average 3,000 kilowatts a month, though actual figures vary depending on the homeowner's lifestyle.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) is just one company that has a program encouraging the design of homes that lower carbon dioxide emissions and feature Energy Star efficient appliances as well as meet building codes and standards for quality and safety.

The homes in Houston are priced between $170,000 and the high $300,000s, and some builders said national standards would help with pricing.
