SAN DIEGO, July 31 (UPI) -- Greenest Host, a new U.S.-based Internet Web hosting company, plans to open to the public Wednesday -- completely powered by solar technology.

Greenest Host will open its new 2,000-square-foot data center, located in the inland desert of southern California with 100 percent of the power from a solar array, Infoworld.com reported.

Company officials estimate the amount of pollution produced by traditional Web hosting companies is equal to that of more than 10 million cars annually.

"Personally, my core values tend to skew toward green application and green causes," said Mike Corrales, Greenest Host chief executive officer, in a statement. "We wanted to make it really easy for end consumers and small businesses to be able to build their own Web sites in a way that coincided with their own personal value system."

During the day Greenest Host has 600 servers connected to the solar array. At night the servers use batteries that have stored excess solar energy through the day. Additionally Greenest host has a backup generator that runs on propane.

Greenest Host's commitment to green technology doesn't stop with its solar panels. The companies is running AMD's Opteron-powered servers officials say use up to 60 percent less energy and generate up to 50 percent less heat. The air conditioning comes from two Energy Star-compliant systems from Freus and the company employs redundant environmental monitors from APC.

Additionally Greenest Host officials say they are planning to add a green roof.
