WALLINGFORD, Conn., June 22 (UPI) -- Distributed Energy Systems Corp. is to begin a solar and wind installation on the Malaysian resort island of Pulau Perhentian.

The Connecticut-based company, which creates and delivers renewable energy products, said the project consists of installing and commissioning two NorthWind 100 wind turbines with a 100 kilowatt photovoltaic energy system.

According to Distributed Energy Systems, the NorthWind 100 wind turbine is designed specifically for isolated grid and distributed generation applications. It is a village-scale wind turbine that meets the needs of small utilities and independent power producers.

Distributed Energy Systems announced the shipment of two 100 kilowatt wind power systems for installation this summer. The wind and solar installation will be integrated with the island's isolated diesel grid, in cooperation with the country's national utility.

Distributed Energy Systems will also supply and install its wind turbine supervisory control and data acquisition system for the island site, using its SmartView software to allow the customer to remotely monitor and control the wind turbines.

The wind-and-solar project reflects the development of renewable energy as a fifth fuel resource under the Malaysian government's fuel diversification policy.
