SAN FRANCISCO, July 25 (UPI) --
The Sierra Club and other U.S. activist groups have launched a campaign to get Home Depot to drop its ads from the Fox network.
More and more consumers are holding businesses accountable for their perceived impact on the environment and energy use.
Fox News has run many segments with guest experts who question the validity of global warming, the group says. Even though Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox, has gone on record admitting the gravity of the climate change situation, Sierra and other environmental and religious groups claim the station is telling "lies" about global warming.
Home Depot has a set of environmental principles including raising awareness of products and practices that reduce environmental impact, providing sustainable products, conserving and minimizing waste. Sierra and one individual protester, Tom Evans, a Seattle lawyer, say they feel Home Depot can't support both Fox and the fight to stop climate change.
"You can't claim you're green if your advertiser is a shady gray," Evans said.
"If you deliver a strong, specific, clear message, absolutely yes," he said. "I think picking one Fox advertiser and making them feel the heat is a very sharp strategy. If Home Depot gets the message that they're becoming the poster child for this problem, others will follow suit," Evans told Sierra. © 2007 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
