KHARTOUM, Sudan, April 21 (UPI) -- An investigation is under way to determine the cause of fire at the U.N.-AU peacekeeping headquarters in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Reports on the fire, which caused an estimated $5 million in damage to equipment and a water-treatment laboratory, were released Monday by the United Nations' and African Union's peacekeeping operations in the region, known as UNAMID, the United Nations reported.
Officials said the fire broke out Sunday night and was brought under control by UNAMID personnel and others. An investigation is currently under way into the cause of the blaze, but UNAMID said peacekeeping operations will not be greatly affected in the war-ravaged Darfur, the United Nations reported.
Beyond the damage to communications equipment and the water-treatment laboratory, "11 container offices and two warehouses were completely destroyed," the U.N. news release said.
