STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Top security authorities were in Sweden Wednesday for the opening of a conference on combating transnational organized crime.
The U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations has brought together law enforcement officials for the International Policing Advisory Council, the United Nations reported.
The two-day conference, organized by the United Nations, the Swedish National Police and the International Peace Institute, is part of an effort by the United Nations to further a dialogue on addressing the destabilization that organized crime has on regions around the world already facing violent rebel groups.
"Establishing fair and effective criminal justice systems is essential if the rule of law is to be established in countries affected by violent conflict, in particular in post-conflict situations where U.N. operations are established," Dmitry Titov, assistant U.N. secretary-general for rule of law and security institutions, said in a statement.
