TARIN KOWT, Afghanistan, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- A Taliban commander and improvised explosive device facilitator in Afghanistan's volatile Uruzgan province was killed during an Australian forces raid.
Australian defense officials announced Tuesday that senior provincial Taliban commander Mullah Akhtar Mohammed was killed during a recent airstrike in a remote region of Uruzgan province, the Australian Ministry of Defense reported.
Mohammed, who led attacks against the International Security Assistance Force and on Afghanistan government buildings in the region, was spotted by an Australian Special Operations Task Group. The unit confirmed that its target was Mohammed and called in an airstrike that killed the Taliban commander and other militant operatives.
"Australian Special Forces observed the air strike which struck the Taliban extremist group, killing Mullah Akhtar Mohammed," Australian Brig. Brian Dawson said in a statement.
"Importantly, the Special Operations Task Group located him, positively identified him and, when it was confirmed that there were no non-combatant Afghans nearby, accurately targeted him for the successful International Security Assistance Force airstrike."
