Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced the appointment of Carol Haave as the new assistant secretary for international affairs at the DHS. Haave, a former Defense Department deputy undersecretary of defense for counter-intelligence and security, takes the new job after spending the last three years in the public sector, the DHS reported.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Carol Haave as assistant secretary for international affairs at the Department of Homeland Security," Chertoff said in a statement.

"Carol is a skilled international negotiator with more than 25 years of combined experience in national security and international affairs."

Haave, who also has served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for security and information operations at the Defense Department, helped to develop the Iraqi national identification card program among other achievements, including spending 10 years as an adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
