BRUSSELS, June 18 (UPI) -- A report by the International Crisis Group says the Egyptian government could end its clash with the Muslim Brothers through political integration.
The report, released Wednesday by the independent non-governmental organization, says the only viable option of ending the ongoing conflict between the Egyptian government and the Muslim Brothers is through integration of the Brothers into mainstream politics, the Crisis Group reported.
The report, titled "Egypt's Muslim Brothers: Confrontation or Integration?" says Egypt risks further instability if the current hard-line stance continues. Officials say Egypt is straining under the pressure of socioeconomic unrest and an uncertainty about what will happen after President Hosni Mubarak leaves office.
The Egyptian government's reaction to the Brothers' 2005 parliament election wins resulted in mass arrests and upheavals, which have increased political tensions.
The Crisis Group report not only calls on the Egyptian government to integrate the Brothers into the mainstream, but also says in order to achieve lasting stability, the Muslim Brothers must embrace political reform along with addressing concerns over the rights of women and the place of religious minorities.
"Ultimately, the Muslim Brothers are too powerful and too representative for there to be either stability or genuine democratization without finding a way to incorporate them," Issandr El Amrani, Crisis Group North Africa analyst, said in a statement.
