U.N. officials from the Office of the Resident Coordinator in South Africa say there has been a dramatic increase in xenophobic violence in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

The violence over the past week, against migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers among other non-natives, has resulted in the death of several people while many more have been injured, the United Nations reported.

Officials say the violence has resulted in the deployment of police to the region in an effort to deter further outbreaks.

"Most of the victims are law-abiding migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers seeking a safe and better life for their families among South Africans," the release said.

"We remain gravely concerned at the prospect of a further escalation in violence, especially against the most vulnerable, including women, children and poor families."
