WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- The FBI announced plans Monday to put Regional Computer Forensics Laboratories in Los Angeles and Albuquerque.

FBI Director Robert Mueller announced the new RCFL sites where a specialized Computer Analysis Response Team conducts digital forensics investigations of federal, state or local crimes. The new sites in Los Angeles and Albuquerque bring the number the FBI's RCFLs across the United States to 16, the FBI reported.

Officials say the RCFL program is an effort by the FBI to address the rapidly evolving threats from cyber-criminals. The CART officials are highly trained in digital media investigations pertaining to crimes committed with computers and other high-tech devices.

"The RCFL program is one of law enforcement's most cost-effective and productive high-tech initiatives operating today," Mueller said in a statement. "By bringing the resources of the RCFL program to Los Angeles and Albuquerque, the FBI is doing its part to build digital forensics capacity at the local level. Both cities have strong support from their partners in local law enforcement and are ideal candidates for RCFLs."
