Dozens of Afghan militants killed

KABUL, Afghanistan, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Twenty-two militants were killed and seven were detained during coalition and Afghan operations in Afghanistan's Zabul and Helmand provinces Monday.

The deaths and detainments were the result of anti-terrorist raids by joint coalition and Afghan units during two different operations, according to the American Forces Press Service.

In the first of two operations officials say two militants were killed, another was wounded with six detained in Zabul province’s Shajoy district. Officials found weapons and ammunition during a search of the area.

“Afghan and coalition forces exercised extreme discipline while under fire,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman, in a statement. “They used effective communication and applied the necessary amount of force needed to eliminate the threat to the team while minimizing collateral damage.”

The second operation led by Afghan and coalition troops occurred in the problematic Helmand province. While passing through the province’s Reeg district Afghan and coalition troops came under enemy fire. The ensuing battle resulted in what officials say was the death of least 20 militants.
