NEWARK, Del., May 22 (UPI) -- GE Aviation reports it will invest $27 million into a facility in Delaware that makes aircraft engine components from ceramic matrix composites.
The planned investment will take place over a five-year period and add 70 positions at the facility in Newark as the company creates a "Lean Lab" for enhanced collaboration between engineering and manufacturing business units.
"This investment is a testament to GE's commitment to this advanced technology," said Jeff Wessels, plant leader at Newark. "The Newark team will play a vital role in the next-generation of aircraft engines and we're proud to be a part of it."
GE Aviation said CMCs are key to achieving higher fuel efficiency, lower emissions and improved environmental performance in jet aircraft engines and the company believes the demand for the CMC components will grow tenfold over the next decade.
Commenting on the planned investment, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell said: "GE Aviation hits many of the targets that we are aiming for, including global reach, new economy jobs and the growth of companies that specialize in products and services at the forefront of innovation.
"This expansion at GE Aviation's Newark plant, and its creation of well-paying jobs, will strengthen our state and local economy."
