Thales radio receives U.S. certification

CLARKSBURG, Md., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Thales Communications Joint Tactical Radio has gained U.S. military certification for the Ultra High Frequency satellite communications Integrated Waveform.

UHF SATCOM systems provide beyond-line-of sight communications for tactical communications while on the move and under all weather conditions.

"The Joint Interoperability Test Command certification is an important milestone for the JEM (Enhanced Multiband Inter/Intra Team Radio), bringing both increased capability and significant value to our nation's warfighters," said Michael Sheehan, president and chief executive officer of Thales Communications Inc. "The JEM radio with SATCOM IW significantly reduces the warfighter's carry load."

Thales said its lightweight and compact AN/PRC-148 radio with SATCOM IW capability gives each team member of a warfighting team an interoperable, beyond line-of-sight communications capability.

"The AN/PRC-148 JEM, an evolution of the battle-proven AN/PRC-148 MBITR, is the smallest, lightest and most power-efficient tactical handheld radio in use today covering the 30-512 MHz frequency range." Thales said.

"It has a Software Communications Architecture-compliant platform that hosts all of today's core waveforms and enables the integration of program enhancements, additional modes, and future waveforms."

Thales said there are more than 120,000 AN/PRC-148 MBITRs deployed with U.S. forces and the units can be upgraded through software for the SATCOM IW capability.
