KAMPALA, Uganda, July 12 (UPI) -- Dozens of people died in bomb attacks in Uganda that targeted areas where people gathered to watch the World Cup final.

Officials set a preliminary count of the dead at 64 with about 70 injured at two sites in Kampala.

They also said the blasts were likely carried out by militants from Somalia. Peacekeepers from Uganda have been stationed in Somalia to help deal with an uprising by groups associated with al-Qaida.

Witnesses said one of the blasts was at a rugby club where a crowd was watching the World Cup final between the Netherlands and Spain. They said the explosion was set off in the middle of the mass of people and indications were that a suicide bomber was involved.

The other attack was at a restaurant owned by Ethiopians. Ethiopia also is backing the Somali government in its fight against insurgents.

The victims were thought to be mostly Ugandans, although foreigners are known to have been injured or killed. There is at least one American among the dead, U.S. officials said.
