Al-Qaida arrests

By United Press International

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, March 25 (UPI) -- More than 100 people suspected to have ties to al-Qaida and said to be planning terror attacks were arrested in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi officials said 58 Saudi nationals and 55 people from other countries -- mostly Yemen -- were detained in the sweep. They allegedly were linked to an al-Qaida group in Yemen and were plotting attacks on oil facilities and other targets.

The Saudis said the suspects were in three groups and apparently didn't know the other groups were also planning attacks. Authorities found weapons, documents and computers when they made the arrests.

Some of those arrested were said to be members of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which is based in Yemen. That group has pledged to carry out assaults on oil resources. After the current arrests, officials said attacks "were about to be implemented."

AQAP was also blamed for an attack on Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the country's security leader, in August. A suicide bomber set off a device near Nayef, who suffered slight injuries.
