BEIJING, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A 53-year-old British man, said to be mentally ill, was executed Tuesday in China after being convicted of drug smuggling.
Akmal Shaikh was put to death despite high-level diplomatic pleas to have the death sentence against him changed. Shaikh was found guilty of taking about 9 pounds of heroin into northwestern China in September 2007. His family said he was "duped" into carrying luggage holding the drugs.
Family members also said Shaikh was mentally ill but Chinese officials said there was no record of such disorders.
The BBC said Shaikh is the first resident of the European Union to be executed in China in more than 50 years.
