WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Charges that Iran has a secret program to make a trigger for a nuclear weapon are false and the documents they are based on are forgeries Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told ABC News in an interview aired Monday.
Last week the Times of London reported it had received a document from 2007 outlining a four-year program for the development and testing of a nuclear trigger. The trigger is a vital component of a nuclear weapon. Iran has consistently claimed its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.
"They are all a fabricated bunch of papers continuously being forged and disseminated by the American government," Ahmadinejad said of the document in the interview.
Presidential adviser David Axelrod told ABC that was "nonsense."
"Nobody has any illusions about what the intent of the Iranian government is," he added.
The State Department said last week The Times report fuels concerns about Iran's intentions and will be investigated. Iran is currently facing more international sanctions after rejection of a proposal to send its low-enriched uranium overseas for processing
