HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- "New Moon," the second movie installment in the "Twilight" vampire book series had an opening weekend box office take of $140.7 million in the United States.

That marked the third-biggest opening, following only the Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" and "Spider-Man 3." Worldwide ticket sales for "New Moon" totaled nearly $260 million.

The tale of a high school girl and her romance with a "vegetarian" vampire is a publishing dream. The four volumes in the series have sold 85 million copies. The film version of "Twilight," the first book, was released last year and amassed $384 million in ticket sales.

The third episode in Stephenie Meyer's series "Eclipse" is penciled in for a June 30 release. "Breaking Dawn" won't be far behind.
