BRUSSELS, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Economic data indicate the 16-nation "eurozone" has moved out of recession.
Statistics released Friday show the gross domestic product in the collective area that uses the euro as a common currency grew by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter.
Gains in the economies in France and Germany are credited with doing the most to pull the region technically out of recession, even though economic data from those countries came in below expectations for the third quarter.
The overall European Union -- many members don't use the euro -- showed a GDP growth of 0.2 percent. The United Kingdom, among those not going with the common currency, is still in recession as its GDP contracted 0.4 percent in the third quarter.
Among individual eurozone members that are deemed to have left the recession behind are Austria, Italy and Slovakia. But Spain's GDP shrank further in the third quarter.
