JARRATT, Va., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The man who carried out a series of sniper attacks in the Washington area seven years ago has been put to death.
John Allen Muhammad, 49, was declared dead at 9:11 p.m. Tuesday after being injected with a series of drugs at a prison in Virginia.
Muhammad was executed for the killing of Dean Harold Meyers, who was shot Oct. 9, 2002, while at a gas station in Virginia. Meyers' death was one of 10 blamed on Muhammad and a young accomplice. Six of the victims were killed in Maryland, three in Virginia and one in the District of Columbia. Three other people were wounded in the Oct. 2-22, 2002, attacks. Several other killings around the country are believed linked to Muhammad.
Muhammad made no statement Tuesday after he was led into the death chamber.
Muhammad's accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, who was 17 when the shooting took place, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to taking part in shootings in Maryland and Virginia.
