Fort Hood shootings

FORT HOOD, Texas, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A U.S. Army major was being held as the suspect in an Army base shooting in Texas that resulted in 13 deaths and 30 other people wounded.

The toll from the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, a huge base south of Dallas, is the highest for such an incident since 13 people died in an attack last April in Binghamton, N.Y. Killeen, Texas, which is the town nearest Fort Hood, was the site of a gunman's rampage in which 22 people were killed in 1991.

The suspect, identified by the Army as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was wounded by civilian police. Hasan was reportedly shot four times and was under guard at an off-base hospital. Military spokesmen said he was expected to survive.

Investigators claim Hasan, who was about to be deployed to Iraq, used an automatic pistol and another handgun in the attack. Fort Hood spokesman Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said a motive for the attack was yet to be determined.
