NEW YORK, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees claimed the World Series title with a 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Wednesday's win, powered by record-tying six runs batted in from Series Most Valuable Player Hideki Matsui, allowed the Yankees to wrap up the best-of-seven series in six games. It was the 27th championship for the Yankees in the 105 times the World Series have been contested. No other team has won the World Series more than 10 times.

Matsui hit a two-run home run in the second inning, singled in two more in the third and doubled in two in the sixth to account for the bulk of the New York offense.

Philadelphia had been seeking to be the first National League team to win consecutive World Series since the Cincinnati Reds did so in 1975-76.

The 2010 major league opening day is April 5, just five months away.
