UN Sec. Gen. Ki-moon speaks to media after Afghan run-off canceled in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The United Nations is relocating hundreds of its workers in Afghanistan in the wake of an attack in Kabul in which five U.N. personnel were killed.

The United Nations was quick to point out it wasn't pulling out completely from Afghanistan but that about 600 of its 1,300 international workers would be moved elsewhere in Afghanistan. The decision isn't expected to affect aid delivery, which is generally handled by Afghan staff members.

An attack Oct. 28 by Taliban militants, disguised as police, on a building where U.N. employees lived resulted in the deaths of eight people, including five affiliated with the United Nations. The three attackers were also killed.

It is unclear how long it will take U.N. officials to find more secure living arrangements for its personnel.

The United Nations also this week said it was cutting back its presence in northwestern Pakistan because its personnel were coming under an increasing number of attacks. That area is the site of a Pakistani military effort to rein in militants.
