North Korea, one day after demanding one-on-one talks with U.S. officials over its nuclear program, said it had extracted weapons-grade material from nuclear fuel.
Pyongyang, through its official news service, reported "noticeable successes" in getting weapons-grade plutonium from nuclear fuel rods. It is believed to have processed enough material for one nuclear weapon and has enough material for another seven or eight bombs.
North Korea Monday called on the United States to meet with it or have Pyongyang officials "go their own way."
U.S. officials have balked at meeting the North Koreans outside of the six-party setup, which would include negotiators from China, Russia South Korea and Japan.
Those talks led North Korea to take steps two years ago to shutter its nuclear program. But last spring, Pyongyang showed the program was ongoing with an underground weapon's test and the firing of several missiles. North Korea also said it wouldn't return to the six-party talks.
