Too many ignore pesticide instructions

DALLAS, May 30 (UPI) -- The North Texas Poison Center advises that people carefully read the directions before applying any pesticides and insecticides.

"The single most important thing to do is read the directions on the container," says Dr. Rebeca Gracia, a toxicologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and managing director of the North Texas Poison Center. "Too many people ignore those directions and get injured."

Always store chemicals in their original containers, keep them locked up and keep them away from food, according to Gracia.

"If spraying pesticide, wear protective clothing like long sleeves, pants and gloves," Gracia said. "Don't spray toward people and avoid the treated area for several hours. Never mix chemicals."
