Most pregnant women good for air travel

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 25 (UPI) -- With the U.S. travel season picking up steam, some moms-to-be can fly safely until 36 weeks.

"When there are no medical or obstetrical complications, it generally is agreed that women can travel safely by air up until 36 weeks of gestation," said University of Alabama at Birmingham women's health nurse practitioner Penelope Bosarge.

However, pregnant women with medical conditions that may result in hypoxia should arrange for supplemental oxygen.

"Women who have significant obstetrical factors such as placental abnormalities or who are at risk for pre-term labor should not travel by air," said Bosarge. "And it's always a good idea to check with your doctor first."
