WASHINGTON, July 8 (UPI) -- Pratt & Whitney has received a $1.5 billion U.S. Navy contract for production of the F135 propulsion system for all three variants of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft, the company announced Friday.

The deal covers low rate initial production for the 10th lot of the propulsion system, Pratt & Whitney said in a statement.

Combined with previous long lead and sustainment awards for this lot, the low rate initial production Lot 10 deal totals $1.95 billion.

The contract covers 99 engines, as well as program management, engineering support, production, non-recurring efforts, spare modules and spare parts, the company said.

Compared to the previous low rate initial production contract, unit prices for 86 conventional takeoff and landing and carrier variant propulsion systems were reduced by 2.6 percent, the company said.

Unit prices for 13 of the short takeoff and vertical landing propulsion systems were reduced by 4.2 percent.

The company is focused on delivering the propulsion system at or below cost, and this latest deal continues to drive down those costs, Pratt & Whitney said.

Pratt & Whitney has to date delivered 288 F135 engines, with deliveries of the 10th lot slated to begin next year.
