WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) -- N2 Imaging Systems has been awarded a $49 million firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity U.S. Navy contract for weapon sight work on the crew-served M2HB and M2A1 .50 caliber machine guns.

The work will include test teardown and evaluation, non-warranty repairs, provision item order spares and data.

The system is a lightweight, self-contained, battery-operated, multi-sensor system that can be used for target acquisition and surveillance in all light and visibility scenarios.

Work will be performed in California with an expected May 2021 completion date.

The U.S. Army named the M2A1, an upgrade to the original "Ma Deuce" .50 caliber machine gun, one of its top inventions for 2011, according to a service article.

Design improvements include a quick charge barrel, fixed headspace and a flash hider that reduces the weapon's signature at night.

The Browning M2HB can be used on a variety of boat, ship and vehicle mountings, according to manufacturer FN Herstal.
