WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin Sippican, Inc., has been awarded a $72.8 million firm-fixed-price, fixed-price-incentive, cost-plus-fixed fee U.S. Navy contract for work on the MK 48 Mod 7 heavyweight torpedo system.

Work will include guidance and control sections, MK 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Advanced Sonar System upgrade kits, test equipment, spares, production support material, engineering support, and hardware repair support.

The contract includes options that will bring the cumulative value of the contract up to $424.6 million if exercised.

Work will be done in Massachusetts and California, with an expected completion date of December 2019.

The contract was competitively procured and two offers were received.

The MK 48 heavyweight torpedo is used by all submarine classes as an anti-submarine and anti-surface weapon, the Navy says.

Its digital guidance system allows for repeated upgrades, the service says.
