"Due to customer related and other considerations, no additional information will be provided related to this new contract award," it said.

However, the electromagnetic railgun is a project of the Office of Naval Research to use pulsed electricity down a rail system to propel projectiles instead of using chemical propellant substances. ONS says on its website the result of the system is greater projectile speed and range.

The railgun project was started in 2005 and entered Phase 2 development in 2012. Phase 2 is for the advancement of technology to a level that allows acquisition of a system.

"A key strategic growth area for DRSS is in supporting U.S. government agencies in the technology and disruptive program areas, and we are proud to have been selected to support this mission critical National Security program," said Dave Carter, president of Kratos' DRSS Division.
