BRUNNTAL, Germany, July 29 (UPI) -- Germany's SFC Energy AG is to supply a next-generation fuel cell system for an undisclosed military customer.

The low-rate initial production order, which includes the testing of the units, is worth more than $1.3 million.

The next-generation fuel cell system, or NGFC, to be supplied is a fully integrated power source for off-grid defense applications in unmanned scenarios in the field, such as vehicle battery recharging, and powers stationary off-grid applications automatically for extended periods of time without the need for user intervention.

"We are proud that this international defense force has selected our technology as source for reliably powering their unmanned devices in the field," said Dr. Peter Podesser, chief executive officer of SFC Energy. "Our fielded fuel cells have an excellent international track record in providing silent, non-detectable power to vehicle-based and stationary off-grid defense applications.

"The NGFC will continue this track record and be an integral part of our defense business going forward."
