BASILDON, England, April 17 (UPI) -- An infrared search-and-track sensor system that does not emit signals of its own is being installed on Gripen E fighters of the Swedish Air Force.

Selex ES said Skyward-G is a passive electro-optical device that detects the heat signatures of air, sea and land threats but cannot be detected itself.

A total of 60 systems were ordered by Saab, maker of the Gripen, but the value of the contract and provisions of the award were not disclosed.

The Skyward-G is manufactured at a Selex ES facility near Milan, Italy.

The order for the system comes on the heels of Saab's choice of Selex ES's BriteCloud expendable Active Decoy as an electronic warfare option on Gripen jets.

Selex ES is a supplier for the Gripen program, providing about 30 percent of the aircraft's electronics, including Mode 5 identification friend/foe systems and Raven ES-05 active electronically scanned radar.
