VILNIUS, Lithuania, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- New assault rifles have been delivered to the military of Lithuania by Belgian manufacturer FN Herstal, the Ministry of Defense reports.

The weapons are FN SCAR-H PR precision rifles, which feature a 20-inch barrel, folding buttstock, and an effective range of about 600 yards with its mechanical precision sights.

"Our focus in the modernization of the Lithuanian Armed Forces is the soldier, while we aim at providing them properly with modern equipment as we seek to ensure that a soldier's tasks are completed," said Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas. "Precision rifles are a step along this road."

The semi-automatic rifle is the latest addition to FN's SCAR family of rifles and Lithuania ordered it in late 2013 through a $3.15 million contract. The rifle fires NATO 7.62x51mm ammunition.

Lithuania said its contract with FN included outfitting the rifles with Smidt&Bender scopes.

The number of rifles ordered under the contract and the number delivered earlier this month were not disclosed.
